Feast or Famine

It’s feast or famine. Some weeks I have so many topics whizzing through my head, I have a hard time pulling out just one. Other weeks, like today…crickets.  This means I’ll wing it. Isn’t that like life though?

To everything there is a season. We go through periods of rough spots, but thankfully we also enjoy patches of light. We should not be surprised, but somehow, we always are.

This morning we got word from a very dear friend that her son had a heart attack earlier today and died. I heard from another friend that she was at the doctor having an unexpected procedure. Another friend awaits test results for recent health issues. Many, like me, are drinking coffee and having a great morning. That is life in a nutshell.

Over the weekend, a friend from Nashville shared pictures of a group of people gathered at the state capital on Saturday. The Neo Nazi group was dressed in black, with masks over their faces proudly holding the Nazi flag. Their message continues to be white supremacy. Everyone else is irrelevant and I guess should disappear. I’d like to ask why wear a mask? Could it be that deep down they are ashamed to show their face?

Last week a friend went to our local library in search of a particular book by Toni Morrison. She was informed this book is no longer on the shelves due to the recent book banning by our local board of supervisors.

Yet, we are a Christian nation. The land of the free. (insert sarcasm)

Meanwhile, a large group met in California last week in support of Alzheimer’s Research. Folks in Middle Tennessee are working hard to provide a sanctuary for older animals who were abandoned. Their mission is to provide a safe, loving place for these pups to live out their days. There is also an elephant sanctuary in southern Tennessee.

Locally, a restauranteur Robert St. John started a nonprofit food bank called Extra Table in 2009 to help Mississippians in need. I have a food pantry in my small town for the same purpose.

All over this country there are countless people doing wonderful things in the name of love, empathy, and compassion. None of these things are off limits to anyone. All are treated equal. It helps on days you hear about Nazi’s and books being banned.

We are an imperfect people in a flawed country, and thanks to grace we are forgiven when we behave badly.

Amen?

  1. Oh, what a gift that you write and share. Yes, there are many crayons in the box (hopefully it’s a 120 box), so we must see all the colors. This permits the yin & yang to be and we get to enjoy the light in order to tackle or handle the dark. Thank-you, Tracey
